Sock knitting workshop for beginners
I am running my Sock Knitting workshop for knitters new to sock knitting. Let me tell you about this workshop.
When does this Sock Knitting workshop take place?
This workshop takes place from 10:00–16:00 on Saturday, 14 September 2024.
Where is the Being Knitterly Studio?
The Being Knitterly Studio is in Loughborough, Leicestershire. I shall send you full details and directions after you have booked.
Why should you come to this workshop?
I love knitting socks – there are so many different sock patterns from simple ones worked in stocking stitch to socks knitted using fancy stitch patterns. You can knit a simple sock to relax or use a sock with a stitch pattern to learn a new technique. You can use mass-produced sock yarns or treat yourself to a beautiful yarn from your favourite hand-dyer. A sock project does not take up much room or need many tools which makes it perfect working on when travelling, whether that is a daily commute or a holiday.
Whether you have never knitted a sock before or you have and want to improve your technique, you will learn lots of tips.
You will have refreshments all day, a home-cooked vegetarian lunch (for all dietary needs), as well as delicious home-baked cake in the afternoon.
How will you learn?
I shall demonstrate techniques, both to groups and individuals. The first few times that you try something new, I will talk you through it while you do it. You will repeat each new technique several times when you work on your project.
What will you learn?
You will learn to:
- Understand sock construction.
- Measure feet for hand-knit socks.
- Knit in the round.
- Knit a heel flap and a small heel turn.
- Pick up stitches for the gusset and decrease for the gusset.
- Knit three different toes.
- Graft stitches together to finish toes.
We will start by finding out about sock construction by looking at a variety of hand-knit socks. I shall demonstrate the different methods for working on a project with a small circumference in the round. I have samples of each method set up, so you can try each method and choose the one you like best.
Next, you start your first sock using a DK yarn, which means fewer stitches and therefore less knitting! You will knit your sock starting at the cuff, also known as top-down. After a short ribbed cuff, you will work the leg in stocking stitch, which is easy because you just knit each round. Then, you will make a rectangular heel flap and small heel turn before picking up stitches for the gusset and then decreasing stitches ready for the foot. You work the foot in stocking stitch, so that is easy! Finally, you decrease for the toe and join the remaining stitches by grafting.
Now you can choose between starting a second small sock or an adult-sized sock. Either way, my aim is for you to practice the skills you have just learnt. If you choose to start an adult-sized sock, you will use a 4-ply sock yarn (the usual yarn for hand-knit socks) – I shall give you guidance for buying this yarn before the workshop. You will start this sock and have the confidence to continue when you return home.
You will leave with one finished small sock and either the beginnings of a second small sock or an adult-sized sock.
