Creating Colour Palettes workshop – September 2020
New workshop at Hope & Elvis
I’m very excited to be running a Creating Colour Palettes workshop at Hope & Elvis in September.
A person described as ‘having an eye for colour’ is thought to be able to discriminate more colours or to make better colour choices than other people. This is seen as a special ability; however, most people can develop their sense of colour.

Why should you come to the Creating Colour Palettes workshop?
You love textiles crafts such as knitting, crochet, weaving, embroidery, appliqué or patchwork. You might love a knitting or crochet design with lots of colours, but you would like to use a different colour palette. Or you would like to choose a colour palette for weaving. Maybe you want to design a patchwork quilt, but you’re not sure how to put colours together. You might have tried to create a colour palette and was not happy with the result.
People who learn about colour find that their confidence in using colour increases. As well as textiles projects, they often find understanding colour helps them when choosing what to wear or when decorating a room.
And it’s a lot of fun!
How will you learn?
Nicki has designed the activities in the first part of this workshop to help you develop your sense of colour. In the second part, you learn how to create simple colour palettes, and in the final part how to develop a more complex colour palette.
You start with some purposeful paint mixing and collage activities. These will help you to understand how colours relate to one another, to describe the differences between similar colours and to explain why some colour combinations go well together.
Then you will use yarns (or embroidery threads or appliqué or patchwork fabric) to create colour palettes. You will start with simple colour palettes based on the colour relationships that you learnt about earlier. Then, you will develop a complex colour palette by working from an inspirational image. You will try to make colours that match those in your image by mixing paints. This will help you understand the characteristics of the colours you need for your colour palette. Then, you will also make a paper weave to help you see the proportions of the different colours in your image. Finally, you will select yarn (or threads or fabric) and experiment with different colour combinations and proportions by making yarn (or thread or fabric) wraps.
Nicki will bring yarn to use for creating colour palettes. However, if you have a particular yarn project in mind, you are welcome to bring your own selection of yarns. Likewise, if you prefer embroidery, appliqué or patchwork, you are welcome to bring your own threads or fabrics respectively.
What will you learn?
You’ll learn to:
- Describe colours in terms of hue, saturation and value.
- Identify colour relationships using a colour wheel.
- Create a simple colour palette based on colour relationships.
- Develop a complex colour palette from an inspirational source.
You’ll leave with greater confidence in choosing and using yarn colours for your projects.
When does the Creating Colour Palettes workshop take place?
10:00 – 16:00, Sunday 20 September 2020.
