Colour creative knitting workshop

I’m returning to The Refectory Table to teach my popular Colour creative knitting workshop.

The Refectory Table is run by Janet Currie, a creative consultant, avid gardener, maker, and project manager. Janet hosts inspirational creative business courses and art workshops for small groups sat around her large oak refectory table.

Why should you come to the Colour creative knitting workshop?

You love projects with lots of colours. You might have knitted designs from patterns featuring stripes, slip stitches or stranded colourwork and now you’d like to substitute colours or use a different yarn. Maybe you want to design your own projects, but you’re not sure how to put colours together or you have tried and were not happy with the results. Or maybe you’d like to try some colour knitting techniques, but are not ready for Fair Isle knitting yet.

You’ll be given refreshments all day, a home-cooked two-course lunch (for all dietary needs), and home-baked cake in the afternoon.

“I had a most enjoyable day on the Colour Knitting Workshop and came away much more confident in my colour choices and inspired to try some slip stitch patterns to show off my new skills.”

What will you learn?

You’ll learn to:

  • Develop a colour palette from an inspirational source.
  • Use the colour wheel to select yarn.
  • Jazz up simple stitches with colour.
  • Knit slip stitch patterns as well as follow written instructions and simple knit charts.
  • Develop your favourite swatches into finished items, such as bags, cushions, scarves and throws.

You’ll create a colour palette from your inspirational image. You’ll learn how your chosen colours work with different stitches by knitting swatches using firstly familiar stitches and then slip stitch patterns. And I’ll introduce you to the colour wheel so that you understand the theory behind your colour choices.

You’ll leave with greater confidence in choosing and using yarn colours for your projects. And you can easily use the stitch patterns to make cushion covers, bags, scarves, and throws.

How will you learn?

You’ll use your inspirational image to make a paper weave then use this to select yarn. Then you’ll use your chosen colours to make yarn wraps enabling you to quickly experiment with different colour combinations and proportions. Next, you use what you’ve learnt so far to knit swatches in familiar stitches. Then you’ll create a collage colour wheel to help you learn about colour theory.

After a delicious lunch, you’ll continue to experiment with your colour palette. This time you’ll knit some more swatches using slip stitch patterns, which only use one colour per row. I’ll help you understand how these patterns work if you’ve not come across them before. You will also be given a handout with written instructions and charts for each stitch pattern.

“It was a thoroughly enjoyable creative event. I learnt new stitches, practical tips, and great ideas to put into practice. Nicki is a skilled and gentle teacher – a technical expert with a very engaging and facilitative manner – informative and fun.”
