Come to this Modular Knitting workshop to learn the modular knitting technique with knitwear designer and tutor Nicki Merrall. Modular knitting (also known as mitred or domino knitting) is a fun technique in which you knit one module (or shape) at a time so that each new module is joined to the previous one(s) as you knit it.

Modular Knitting Level 1

Learn to make a garter stitch square with a single mitre: you knit these in rows. You will use one colour for your first square. Then you will learn how to pick up stitches from this square, ready to start the next one. You can use more than one colour for the other squares, trying different stripe patterns. Finally, you add a simple border, also knitted in rows. The decreases in a mitre cause the stripes to bend around a corner, so you will find it easy to create a project that looks great! And because you are repeating the same technique many times, you will find it relaxing to make mitred squares projects.

Level 1 workshop content:

• Casting on using the knitted cast-on method.
• Knitting a mitred square in garter stitch.
• Picking up stitches from an existing mitred square to start a new one.
• Varying the basic mitred squares using stripes.
• Adding a simple border to your mitred square sample.
• Planning projects using mitred squares.

Skills for Level 1:

• You should be confident with casting on and off and working in garter and stocking stitch.

Modular Knitting Level 2

Learn to make squares with four mitres; you knit these in the round. Your project is a small blanket comprising four mitred squares with a border. You will make your first square, and then learn how to pick up stitches, ready to add more squares. You can use more than one colour for each square. The decreases in these mitred squares cause the stripes to form concentric squares rather than straight lines. You can try different stripe patterns for your other squares before adding a border, which you will knit in the round. I think you will find it absorbing to see how each new colour changes the appearance of your square.

Level 2 workshop content:

• Knitting a mitred square in the round using garter stitch.
• Working a variety of decreases.
• Starting a new mitred square by picking up stitches from an existing one.
• Knitting mitred squares with concentric stripes.
• Adding a border to your mitred square sample by working in the round.
• Planning projects using mitred squares.

Level:

• You are confident with casting on and off, working in garter and stocking stitch, and can knit in the round.
• You have knitted basic mitred squares (in garter stitch with one mitre).

• 4.00 mm knitting needles for the beginner’s workshop.
• 4.00 mm double-pointed needles for the improver’s workshop.
• Lockable stitch markers.

• A yarn needle.

The Being Knitterly pop-up shop will sell lockable stitch markers, knitting needles, and yarn.
