Engage in knitting, crochet, or embroidery for mindfulness, connection, and the satisfaction of making something

Knitting, crochet and embroidery are rhythmic, repetitive crafts that many people find calming and rewarding. They require few tools, are portable, and offer endless opportunities to learn new skills.

Nicki is an experienced facilitator of therapeutic textiles, combining creativity and wellbeing to help participants feel relaxed, confident and connected.

In her Creative Wellbeing sessions, Nicki inspires people to try something new, learn practical techniques, and work on their own projects in a relaxed and friendly environment. Sessions are suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience.

Creative textile activities can support wellbeing in several ways. They encourage gentle concentration and mindfulness, help people build confidence as they develop new skills, and provide the satisfaction of making something by hand. Working on a project helps people set achievable goals and enjoy a sense of progress and accomplishment. Just as importantly, the sessions create opportunities for people to connect with others in a friendly and welcoming space.

Nicki has many years of experience delivering creative textile sessions in educational and wellbeing settings. She currently runs regular Therapeutic Textiles sessions at Headway Nottingham, and has also delivered creative wellbeing workshops for organisations including the University of Nottingham Nursing and Midwifery Association and the University of Derby Students’ Union.

Examples of Creative Wellbeing activities

Headway Nottingham

Since 2014, Nicki has run weekly two-hour Therapeutic Textiles sessions for members with brain injuries. Participants can try knitting, crocheting, embroidery, or weaving. Nicki introduces simple projects and then supports members in developing personalised projects suited to their interests and abilities.

University of Nottingham Association of Nursing and Midwifery

Nicki delivered knitting sessions designed to support student wellbeing. Participants learned basic knitting skills before making a “Bunny from a Square”. As their confidence grew, they knitted baby hats using a pattern designed by Nicki, with plans to donate them to baby units at the hospitals where they trained.

University of Derby Students’ Union

As part of the 2023 De-stressival event, Nicki ran a drop-in session where students were invited to knit or crochet a square for a collaborative baby blanket.

Nicki can deliver regular or one-off sessions. She can adapt projects for beginners or more experienced makers, and materials can be provided if required.
