Description
Discover what works–and why–so you can create beautiful colour palettes for your knitting projects
A relaxed, hands-on workshop to help you choose colours with confidence for your knitting projects.
If you’ve ever struggled to put colours together for a project, this workshop will help you understand what works–and why.
You’ll start with some simple, practical exercises using paint mixing and collage to explore how colours relate to each other. This is a gentle, creative way to begin developing your eye for colour–no experience needed.
We’ll introduce some colour theory along the way, but always in an easy-to-understand way.
In the morning, you’ll play with paint and collage to explore colour relationships. You’ll then use yarn to try out different colour combinations and proportions by making wraps.
In the afternoon, you’ll knit small swatches using simple stitches and slip stitch patterns, so you can see how your colour choices work in practice.
By the end of the day, you’ll have a better understanding of colour, a collection of your own samples, and the confidence to choose colours for your knitting projects.
Workshop content:
- A designer’s ‘show and tell’ using Nicki’s designs and swatches.
- Understanding colour: hue, saturation and value.
- Exploring colour through paint mixing.
- Using the colour wheel to identify colour relationships.
- Developing ideas through collage.
- Creating simple and more complex colour palettes.
- Trying out colour combinations using yarn wraps.
- Knitting swatches to see how colours work in practice.
You’ll leave with your paint, collage and knitted samples, along with greater confidence in choosing colours for your projects.
Level:
This workshop is suitable if you’re confident knitting garter, stocking and moss stitch in a single colour and would like to start using more than one colour.
The techniques from the first part of the workshop can also be used for other crafts, including crochet, embroidery, patchwork, and weaving.
