Nicki will guide you through a variety of activities that will help you develop your sense of colour and create colour schemes. You will leave with plenty of ideas to continue your adventures with colours, whether you are a knitter, crocheter, spinner, weaver or stitcher.

Join knitwear designer Nicki Merrall to learn about creating colour palettes for textile crafts.

Many people think that ‘having an eye for colour’ is a special ability, but most people can develop their sense of colour through simple activities. In this workshop, you will learn about colour theory, then do some paint-mixing and collage exercises to start to develop your sense of colour. You will also learn how to use the colour wheel to create simple colour palettes and how to develop a complex colour palette from your own inspirational image.

You will leave having greater confidence in choosing colours of fibre, thread and yarn for your projects.

Workshop comprises:

A designer’s ‘show and tell’ using Nicki’s designs and swatches.
An introduction to colour theory.
Paint mixing and collage exercises to help develop a sense of colour.
Creating a simple colour palette.
Developing complex colour palettes.
Refreshments all day together with a two-course lunch.

You will learn to:

Describe colours in terms of hue, saturation and value.
Use paint mixing to explore hue and saturation.
Identify colour relationships using a colour wheel.
Use collage to create a colour wheel.
Create a simple colour palette using the colour wheel.
Develop a complex colour palette starting from an inspirational source.

Price includes:

Tuition.

Please bring:

Notebook and pen.
An apron to protect your clothes.
Two copies each of two to three images to use as your colour inspiration.

Please print one copy of each image as large as possible on A4 paper; you will be cutting this one up. The other copy is for reference, so can be any size.

Anyone who wishes to create colour palettes for any textile craft.

COVID precautions

At the Hope & Elvis studio, it is far easier to do the things necessary to ensure everyone’s safety. The studio is large, airy and easy to ventilate. The number of students will be low, relative to the size of the studio, which means students can have a large work area and maintain social distance. The studio will be thoroughly cleaned beforehand and surfaces and handles will be cleaned throughout the day. There will be plenty of soap and sanitiser gel around the studio, and Dettol sprays for the toilet. Visors will be provided to wear when watching demonstrations. We are unlikely to share any equipment, but if we do, it will be wiped between uses.

Lunch will be provided by Magie who prepares all lunches for workshops at Hope & Elvis. She will prepare food wearing appropriate PPE. You can eat your lunch at your work area or outside if weather permits. Hope & Elvis is part of the Welbeck Estate. There are a few other artists’ studios, a farm shop, a garden centre and the Harley Gallery on site. Apart from that, Hope & Elvis is in a rural location which is easily accessible from the M1 or A1.
